Tionól Gaeilge UCD is back! Since its inception, this unique gathering has been very successful and will be hosted once again by Gaeltacht UCD in 2020.

This assembly is aimed at adults in Ireland and abroad who are interested in the Irish language and in Irish culture. It will also suit students who are studying Irish as a subject or undertaking an Irish Studies degree.

Beginning Monday, June 29th to Friday, July 3rd, lectures, classes and social events will take place on the campus in UCD Belfield. This year’s theme is ‘Irish in a Global Context’ and guest speakers include Professor Kevin Scannell from Saint Louis University and James Kelly from the Ireland Canada University Foundation (ICUF).

‘We’re delighted to welcome our global citizens to the Assembly’, director of the centre Clár Ní Bhuachalla said. ‘The Tionól is a real highlight to our year with old friends coming from every corner of the globe and indeed meeting with new learners from further afield.’

Language classes will be held each day, Monday to Friday, from 9.30am until 1.00pm. These classes will be offered at five levels and the emphasis will be on developing the participants’ spoken language skills.

Lectures will take place in the afternoon, Monday to Thursday, in which the focus will be on various aspects of the Irish language and culture – folklore, for example, place names, literature and the singing tradition. School participants can choose to attend an Irish language version or an English language version of each lecture; the speaker will deliver the talk in one language and then, after a short break, he/she will give the same talk in the other language. Cultural events will be held each evening as well.

Option 1 – All Tionól activities, without accommodation: €265 (€215 student rate)
Option 2 – All Tionól activities, and bed and breakfast accommodation (five nights): €620 (€570 student rate). Accommodation will be provided on the UCD campus, from Sunday to Friday
